Writing Strategies: Written Academic Discourse

Thursday (25/10/2018)
For today's class we were taught on 'Academic Discourse'.

Anything you produce in academia, you are taking part in academic discourse. The main focus of academia is research (writing an essay etc. is the output)
There's a certain language for academic discourse, it is more formal and academic. As undegraduates, we are just at the beginning stage of the competence in handling academic language.

So is academic writing considered formal writing?
Academic writing is quite formal, but at times they can be informal (when you add in your opinions). However, one should know how to juggle their writing.

Problems with Academic Discourse:

1. Students/ Early Carrier Professionals/ Professionals
2. Native/Non-Native Language Users (language fluency and social & discourse norms)

Proper English in terms of Academic discourse; native speakers are no longer the sole arbiters on the proper use of English.

Overview on Written Academic Discourse:
1. Obvious mistakes and styles
2. Interference from other languages
3. Different cultural rhetoric

(Non-native writing would consciously stick to several forms for example here in Malaysia we tend to overuse 'hence' and 'therefore' in our writing)
