Approaches to Writing: Process and Genre Approach

Thursday (27/09/2018)

The Process Approach is not a straightforward process. It includes a lot of pre-writing, writing, revising and editing before achieving the final product. The motto for this approach is "Writing is rewriting". Unlike the product approach, the process approach is a collaborative approach and it promotes the development of language use through activities like brainstorming and group discussions.

The process of this approach includes:
1) Generation of ideas
2) Compilation of ideas
3) Planning
4) Drafting
5) Revising
6) Editing

The Genre Approach is an extension to the product approach. It brings attention to the structure, language features, audience, purpose and context of the writing. This approach also puts emphasis on social and cultural practice. Students learn through imitating and exploring different kinds of models. This exposure will then help students detect specialized forms of the genre.
