Reading Strategies: Pre-, While- and Post-reading

There are 3 reading strategies : - Pre-reding - While-reading - Post-reading Pre-reading (talks about what I can bring to the table? What's the purpose ?) Pre-reading could be done by brainstorming and group discussions on the definition, the charateristics and experiences that we have had with that particular topic. While-reading (most vital part to obtain an overview and the relevance of the text) To be honest, I've never actually heard the term 'while-reading', but this reading strategy involves 'skimming and scanning' . To skim and scan texts, we can refer to the summaries, headings or even illustrations of the text. We are not suppose to read everything, just search for specific information and see whether the text is relevant or not. Make notes and highlight! Post-reading (summarize and use the points you've highlighted)

Approaches to Reading: Bottom-Up, Top-Down and Interactive Approaches

BBI3223: Approaches to Reading and Writing (2nd and 3rd Lecture) I know it is super late to be posting this, but hey, better late than never. So, here's my update on the second week of Reading and Writing class. Dr. Ikhlas gave a quick recap on what was taught on Tuesday's class (which I did not attend, I'm so sorry Dr. Ikhlas 😭). Luckily, she had uploaded the slides on Putrablast, and I did manage to do some self-study. I was super stoked when I saw 'Macavity' there! It got me all curious as what was taught in the previous class. Turns out Macavity was an example to a reading approach called 'Bottom-Up'. The Bottom-Up approach talks about the smallest unit of comprehension and building it to something meaningful. This approach is suitable for children and foreign language learners. Approaches to Writing: Process and Genre Approach

Thursday (27/09/2018) The Process Approach is not a straightforward process. It includes a lot of pre-writing, writing, revising and editing before achieving the final product. The motto for this approach is "Writing is rewriting". Unlike the product approach, the process approach is a collaborative approach and it promotes the development of language use through activities like brainstorming and group discussions. The process of this approach includes: 1) Generation of ideas 2) Compilation of ideas 3) Planning 4) Drafting 5) Revising 6) Editing The Genre Approach is an extension to the product approach. It brings attention to the structure, language features, audience, purpose and context of the writing. This approach also puts emphasis on social and cultural practice. Students learn through imitating and exploring different kinds of models. This exposure will then help students detect specialized forms of the genre.
