For today's class we were divided into groups of 4-5. My group and I chose the topic on the advantages and disadvantages of the Interactive Reading Model. We were required to look up for journal articles on our chosen topics. As we look for information regarding our topic, we had to apply the reading strategies we've learned from the previous class.
Pre-reading:
We had a group discussion on what aspect of the interactive reading model we wish to find out about. We decided to focus on the advantages and the disadvantages of the interactive reading model.
Our question:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the interactive reading model in university students?
While-reading:
Afterwards, we moved onto looking for some articles on the Internet. We applied the skimming and scanning technique. This technique was very useful as it saved us a lot of time. Instead of reading the whole article, we focused on the headings and search for specific information only.
These were the points I managed to find out from my article:
The demographic: female university students from Saudi Arabia, majoring in banking
1) Difficulty to discover what reading materials they (the learners) like.
2) Difficullty to discover suitable reading materials
3) This approach is suitable because you can go back and forth with the bottom-up and top-down approach.
Post-reading:
We formed our opinions:
1) It depends on the students' environment and schemata
2) Teachers play an important role in increasing students' interests in reading as they will act as facilitators not only as performance monitors.
3) Teachers should consult professional help in providing materials such as attending workshops.
