 Approaches to Writing: Product Approach

The product approach is traditional approach in which students mimic a model text. This approach encourages students to imitate writing models suppplied by the teacher.

In this approach, the organization of ideas are more important than the ideas themselves. The Product Approach is a good way for students to practice on an aspect of their writing (vocabulary, cohesive devices etc.) and to produce fewer mistakes in their writing. However, this approach lacks creativity and is repetitive.

In my opinion, this approach would be suitable for writing in which the features are fixed. For example, writing a postcard or a formal letter. This is because, these kind of writing focuses on format, idea organization and grammar.
